Principal’s Report
Our vision is to foster every individual’s academic and social development driven by high expectations for success and aspirations for them to become resilient, respectful individuals.
Kaya Families,
What a fantastic effort be every Australian Olympian, take some time to celebrate their stories and journey to success with your child, as they too are embarking on their own journeys for success.
Congratulations to the students who participated in the Clarkson Challenge last week, Shanae, Cormack, Sydney, Enaj, Zain, Jozef, Alliyah and Aryan. They were selected to represent Somerly Primary School. The competition is a battle of the minds and success is determined by team work. Clarkson Community High School will be attending our school to present the students with the trophy in the coming week.
We were very fortunate last week to have the Member for Pearce Tracey Roberts MP attend our school to present our children with a seed library, consisting of vegetable, flower and bush tucker seeds. The aim is to develop a generation of junior growers who understand where food comes from and gain the knowledge and skills to grow their own.
Book Week
We changed things a little this year and held the book parade on Monday, in two sessions, so that families could sit in the undercover area and enjoy seeing their children and their classmates in character costumes. We hope you enjoyed the morning, and we would love to hear your feedback on the event, please email somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
I would like to thank Mr Gane for hosting the event, and our amazing staff who dressed up in amazing costumes to share in the joy of bringing story characters to life. We are so lucky to have a wonderful group of staff who find enjoyment in their profession.
The Book Fair opened on Tuesday 20th and runs until Friday 23rd, please feel welcome to drop into the library and browse the selections available for purchase.
Our Grandparent’s Afternoon Tea will be held on Thursday 22nd at 2.15pm, please RSVP attendance to the front office.

Behaviour Focus
Our behaviour focus for Week 6:-
We are learning to: be safe in the playground by keeping our hands, feet and objects to ourselves.
This is because: everyone is entitled to play safely.
What we will see:
- Students playing in a responsible way.
- Rules being followed.
- Students using polite and respectful words when speaking to each other.
- Students seeking adult support when issues can’t be resolved.
- Sports equipment being used correctly.
Students Late to School
If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.
Not Feeling Well?
If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
Late Collection of Students
Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.
Art Project
Over the past few weeks Rooms 3 and 4 have participated in a special painting activity for our Somerly Primary School garden beds. The students chose their favourite colours and with guidance placed their handprints onto the garden beds to ‘make their mark’ on our planters. The students did an amazing job and enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of such a special project. Some of our year 1 students also helped to plant some wonderful new plants with Mrs Mulder into the garden beds.
Next time you are walking past rooms 3 and 4, don’t forget to check out this beautiful new area that the students have worked so hard on creating for us all to share.

Science Week 2024
National Science Week runs from the 10th -18th August. This year’s theme was Species Survival - More than just sustainability. The theme aimed to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world. To educate our students about this important topic we had an incursion for years 1 to 6.
The amazing team from WA Wildlife came to our school on the 13th and 14th August and brought with them some local, scaley wildlife to teach our students about the animals, their vital role in our ecosystem, and importantly how we can work together to protect them.
Our students had an amazing time and for many it was the first time they have had the opportunity to get up close and personal with these animals, many faced their fears and touched a snake or a lizard. We also had several students write recounts of their favourite things about the incursion and all our classes completed morning literacy activities that linked to Science Week.

Clarkson Challenge 2024
Another exciting event run during Science Week is the Clarkson Challenge. The Clarkson Challenge is an annual academic problem-solving program in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), where 2 teams of 4 students from Years 4-6 interested in science are set problems to solve using scientific knowledge, technology skills and teamwork, all while following a design process.
On August 15th the students visited Clarkson Community High School for the day and competed in the challenge for the chance to win free tickets to Sci-Tech and a giant trophy. In line with this year's science week them, Species Survival - more than sustainability the students were given an endangered species and together in their groups of 4 they had to create a model of their animal or plant out of recycled cardboard and then they had to create a PowerPoint explaining what their species was, why it was endangered and how they could help save it. Both our teams represented our school positively, showing maturity, teamwork and problems solving skills to complete the task. At the end of the day both teams had to present their presentation in the auditorium for judging.
I would like to congratulate the ‘Somerly Warriors’ who came first, beating the teams from Clarkson and Merriwa Primary Schools. They presented some amazing facts and ideas about how to save the Kimberley Death Adder. Well done to Zain, Shanae, Jozef and Enaj!
