Principal’s Report
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Our vision is to foster every individual’s academic and social development driven by high expectations for success and aspirations for them to become resilient, respectful individuals.
Kaya Families
Remembrance Day
Thank you to staff and students for their Remembrance Day wreath creations and participation with the assembly.
We had the honour of Tracey Roberts MP and Mr Mark Folkard MLA attending our school assembly for Remembrance Day.
Our Student Councillors, Mr Turnbull and myself attended the Cambrai Village Remembrance Service, our students participated in the laying of wreaths.
Digital Olympics
Thank you to Mrs Sutherland-Mundy for organising our annual Digital Olympics, the children had a great time, problem solving and working collaboratively to represent their country. Thank you to the parents and staff who supported this event.
PBS Reward Event
We are excited to announce a school-wide PBS reward event for students who have demonstrated expected behaviours this term, aligning to our school values of being Respectful, Responsible and Safe. The event will feature a 30-minute play session at the new playground. Once the event details are finalized, you will receive an invitation via Consent2Go. Please refer to our school’s Good Standing policy, we encourage parents to discuss the school’s expectations with their child to encourage positive behaviours.
Please be aware that some students, upon arrival to school in the morning, are leaving school grounds to go over to the new playground in Riverlinks Park. This is a cause for concern as students are unsupervised as the playground is not part of Somerly Primary School. The playground belongs to the City of Wanneroo and therefore open to the public.
School Grounds
You may have noticed that our school lawns appear dry and barren. This is due to a broken bore, which has taken some time to repair due to difficulties in sourcing parts. In the meantime, our dedicated staff and students have been diligently watering patches of the garden and lawn. We are pleased to inform you that a temporary repair has been made to the bore, which should provide immediate relief to our water supply.
2025 Planning
We continue with preparations for 2025, including class structures and student placements. To ensure we have the most accurate information for our planning, please inform the school if your child will be moving to a different school in 2025. We welcome any requests for your child’s placement next year and will do our best to accommodate them, although we cannot guarantee all requests will be fulfilled.

Behaviour Focus
Our behaviour focus for Week 6 is:-
We are learning to: immediately follow all staff instruction.
This is because: Everyone is entitled to learning and to feel safe.
What we will see:
- Active listening.
- Questions being asked for clarification.
Students Late to School
If your child arrives late to school, they are missing critical morning routines and learning activities. The school day begins at 8:40am and students will be considered late if they do not arrive by this time. If your child arrives after 9:00am you are required to enter through the front office and provide us with a reason for the lateness. A late slip will be printed for you to give to the class teacher.
Not Feeling Well?
If your child is not feeling well before school, please keep them home and notify the office by phoning 6206 4200, sending an SMS to 0437 480 486 or emailing somerly.ps@education.wa.edu.au.
Late Collection of Students
Somerly Primary School has a student finish time of 2.45pm each day. If your child has not been picked up before 3pm, you will be required to come to the front office to sign them out.
Music
Wow! What a wonderful musical week! Thanks to the Somerly staff and our mental health program, we were able to watch, play and dance with two professional groups.
First with some of the WASO string family and then Akwaaba African Drums and their Dancer. WASO played some favourites including Toy Story, Star Wars and Bluey whilst explaining how the instruments worked and playing up and close with our students. Even the Kindergarten students were completely surprised how smooth the strings were.
Then our students got to play African rhythms for a whole hour, breaking up their hard work with dancing and singing throughout. I think I speak for the entire staff who attended that it was a joy to hear live music and watch our students be totally immersed in a musical moment. Their smiles said it all and the students informed questions truly showed our musical acts just how smart Somerly children are.

Gardening Club
Kaya everyone and welcome back to term 4. Over the holidays we had a few things going on in the garden - we had the foundations, electricity and water tap installed for our green house and we had the foundations laid for our new garden shed which will be located closer to our garden for easier access. During our first week back in Gardening Club our students also tried some of our mulberries which are now in season on our tree, and are very delicious and maintaining and watering our salad mixes which will be harvested for Friday’s assembly.

A Message from the School Board
As we move into the second half of the final term of the school year, Somerly is buzzing with activity. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all parents, guardians, and staff for their continued commitment and unwavering support to our school community. Your dedication truly makes Somerly a place where students thrive and grow.
I am also delighted to formally introduce and welcome our three new parent representatives on the school board: Dr Christopher O’Brien, Ms Leandra Bayman, and Ms Rosemary Mackie. Each of these individuals brings a unique perspective, representing different segments of our diverse parent body. Their extensive knowledge and varied experiences will be invaluable in ensuring the board continues to reflect and address the multifaceted needs of our school community.
We are very grateful for their decision to join the board, and we look forward to their input as we work together to implement positive changes and strategies for the future of Somerly Primary School. Each of these new members will be featured in upcoming newsletter entries, where they will share a bit more about themselves, so be sure to watch out for those introductions.
Additionally, I am excited to share that the Riverlinks All Abilities Playground, located just across the oval in Riverlinks Park, is now open. It has been wonderful to see so many families enjoying this fantastic new space. I’d like to extend a special thanks to one of our board members and local member of parliament, Mr Mark Folkard MLA, for his dedication and advocacy in making this playground a reality for the benefit of all families – The playground is a result of Mr Folkard’s hard work with the council, in securing a considerable state government grant. We also express our gratitude to the City of Wanneroo for their role in bringing this project to life.
With the school year soon drawing to a close, it is a particularly busy and exciting time. To all families, thank you once again for your dedication and involvement, enriching our school and helping us create an environment where every student can thrive.
Warm regards
Harry Turnbull - School Board Chair
